Collagen is the hardworking, underrated protein in your body. It is a key structural protein within your connective tissues that supports healthy skin, hair, nails, bones, and connective tissue.1 Collagen production occurs naturally to maintain healthy skin and helps make the body flexible.1
Even though your body can create this protein, natural collagen production slows down over time and decreases more dramatically by middle age.2 In addition, modern diets may be deficient in glycine – the key amino acid found in collagen,3 further highlighting the importance of considering a collagen supplement.
THE BENEFITS:
Taking collagen can benefit your body in more than just one way!
Skin – Research shows that collagen supplementation helps increase skin elasticity and hydration.4
Bones – Research points to collagen supplementation helping with bone formation and reducing bone breakdown.5
Muscles – Research shows collagen supplementation combined with exercise can help increase muscle mass and strength.6
CHOOSING A COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENT:
Consider the type of collagen you are taking, and which additional ingredients are added to it.
- Pick a hydrolyzed collagen – it’s been broken down into smaller, easier to absorb fragments (peptides) and easier to mix in liquids
- Ensure that Vitamin C is added – to support the body’s natural collagen production7
- Include the amino acid Tryptophan – to make a complete protein (collagen lacks tryptophan) and get maximum benefits
WHO NEEDS TO SUPPLEMENT:
- Individuals looking to build lean muscle mass while doing resistance training
- Adults who are looking for joint and bone support, including individuals with osteoarthritis
- Adults looking to support healthy skin, hair, and nails
